Flash: Create a Disjointed Rollover

While image rollovers are the standard for navigation, they do have some limitations. Would you like to create a rollover that doesn't have to be the same size as the original image, nor does it need to be stacked on top of the original image? That's what disjointed rollovers are all about, and Flash makes it easy to create rollovers that load quickly and look great!

1. In order to create a rollover button, you'll need to import or create an object.. Select the object on the Stage and choose Insert...Convert to Symbol. Give the symbol a name and choose the Button behavior. Click OK.

2. Double-click the converted button symbol. You should now be inside the button symbol's timeline, but you should also be able to see a ghosted preview of the main timeline/Stage. Use this ghosted preview as a reference for where the rollover should appear.

3. Select the OVER frame on the timeline and choose Insert...Keyframe.

4. Import a photo or create an object that should appear on the OVER frame for the button symbol. Resize the object/photo if necessary.

5. Select the Scene 1 tab in the upper left hand corner of the timeline. This will take you back to the main timeline/Stage.

6. Use the Text tool to create a text label for the button on the Stage.

7. Choose Control...Enable Simple Buttons to preview the rollover button on the Stage.

8. Continue to create objects, then convert each to a button symbol and import or create an object that should appear on the OVER frame for each button. Don't forget to insert a keyframe on the OVER frame too.
